The Lies We Tell Ourselves Around Feminine Leadership

Feminine leadership is often misunderstood and frequently reduced to a stereotype that equates being in touch with only feminine qualities, like empathetic, intuitive, nurturing, compassionate, gentle, cooperative, supportive, and patient.

This misconception leads many to embrace a one-dimensional approach, forgetting the masculine traits, pushing them out of balance and into what is often called the 'wounded feminine'.

When we believe embodying feminine energy means forsaking assertiveness and responsibility, we set ourselves up for disempowerment. Many will see the feminine as weak or too soft and flowy to recognise themselves when they believe being in their feminine will remove all their masculine traits.

The Pitfalls of Misunderstood Feminine Leadership

Imagine a woman who believes that to be truly feminine, she must always be accommodating and never assert her needs. She avoids conflict at all costs, even when it means sacrificing her own well-being. She might find herself in a job where she is constantly taken advantage of, doing more than her fair share of work because she feels she must be endlessly supportive.

Or consider a man who thinks being in touch with his feminine side means he must relinquish all ambition. He becomes passive, waiting for opportunities to come to him rather than actively pursuing his goals. Both are classic examples of how misunderstanding feminine energy can lead to imbalance and a sense of powerlessness.

The Importance of Balance

Let's be clear: embracing feminine energy does not mean abandoning responsibility. True feminine energy is visionary and powerful. It involves intuition, creativity, and nurturing—qualities that can drive significant change when balanced with masculine traits like structure and decisiveness.

In my experience, women who only embrace their feminine side often lack balance. They become my most challenging clients. These women don't take responsibility for their lives or show resourcefulness. They usually expect external solutions to internal problems, leading to a cycle of dependency and frustration.

On the other hand, I find it more rewarding to work with women who are predominantly masculine in their energy. These women take charge, set goals, and follow through with plans. They are proactive and driven.

However, when these women integrate feminine traits into their lives, they achieve a beautiful and harmonious balance, making them more powerful than they could ever imagine. This combination allows them to be not only effective and goal-oriented but also empathetic, intuitive, and nurturing.

Science Behind the Balance

From a psychological perspective, research on gender traits and leadership supports this balance. Studies have shown that the most influential leaders, regardless of gender, show a blend of masculine and feminine traits.

For example, a study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found that leaders who balance assertiveness (a masculine trait) with empathy (a feminine trait) are more successful in motivating and managing their teams.

Also, neuroscience tells us that both hemispheres of the brain—often associated with different types of thinking and problem-solving—need to work together for optimal functioning. The left hemisphere, typically linked with logical and analytical thinking, complements the right hemisphere, which is associated with creativity and intuition.

Embracing both sides of this cognitive spectrum leads to more holistic and effective problem-solving and decision-making.
