Why I Left Instagram: Embracing a Slower, More Meaningful Life

In our fast-paced, hyperconnected world, it's easy to get swept up in social media, endlessly scrolling and checking our phones for updates.

Fast social media, like Instagram and TikTok, are now crucial to how we talk, work, and see ourselves. They show us many perfect pictures and give us quick (but fake) happiness boosts.

But what happens when you decide to step back, unplug, and seek a slower, more intentional life?

My Journey to Disconnect

I left Instagram in June 2024 because I yearned for a slower, more meaningful existence. The constant need to be online, to check notifications, and to chase fleeting moments of digital validation became exhausting.

For a long time, I believed running a successful business meant being eternally plugged into social media. But that wasn't true.

The algorithms, the need to keep up with trends, and the ruthless pressure to post took a toll. I wanted to build real, deep connections in person and discovered that it's possible to grow a business without relying on social media.

In fact, our relationship with social media will evolve in a few years. Just like smoking, the habit of incessantly scrolling through our phones will be viewed with contempt.

The Impact of AI and Fake Content

With advancements in artificial intelligence, distinguishing between real and fake online personas is becoming increasingly difficult. The increase in fake accounts and fake news changes how we consume content.

I'm tired of the online facade, the constant posting, and the addictive nature of social media—it's like fast food, tempting but ultimately unsatisfying.

I long for a slower, gentler life filled with quality relationships. I want to build my brand authentically, embracing longer-form writing that Instagram's format simply didn't allow.

Blogging and love-letter emails align perfectly with my vision, providing a space for thoughtful, meaningful content.

This way of sharing my wisdom and knowledge feels authentic and aligned with my soul. I love writing longer texts and using my voice—but in a slower way that allows me to embrace my feminine energy.

A Turning Point: The Instagram Hack

In August 2023, my Instagram account was hacked, and I lost all control over it. Surprisingly, my initial reaction wasn't panic. Instead, I thought, "If I don't get my account back, I won't return to Instagram."

Although I managed to regain control—because letting someone else manage an account with 10K followers was unnerving—the experience solidified my decision.

The fears that kept me tethered to the platform began to dissipate:

  • "All these followers, I can't just quit."

  • "Every business owner needs to be on Instagram."

  • "How will I reach new people without it?"

  • "What about the community I've built?"

Despite these concerns, the desire to escape the dopamine hits and the fast-paced nature of social media kept resurfacing. Instagram has been a fantastic tool for many years, helping me build an online network and learn new things. But it also consumed countless hours and stimulated dependency.

Embracing a Digital Detox

Perhaps you can relate. There is a time for everything, and my time on Instagram has ended. When I made the final decision, I felt a deep sense of relief.

As I transition away from Instagram, I invite those who wish to join me in a slower, softer approach to leadership and living. I will continue to share my journey in ways that feel good, creative, and expansive.
